Flowers for the Sick

(Click on the thumbnail for the bigger, better version)

If you have seen Tennessee Williams' Streetcar Named Desire, you are likely to remember, "Flores por los muertos." Since I may be under the weather—but definitely still kicking, the line isn't appropriate in my situation. Never mind. I took some liberties in my translation of the playwright's dialogue. I am sure he became accustomed to that.

I wasn't feeling well over a period of several days and I got two beautiful bunches of flowers to cheer me up. The Husband had to travel to Los Angeles and brought home a bunch of pink peonies and the white tulips you see here. Even though I didn't feel up to taking photographs until the flowers were past their prime, I love the look of them in their last days.

I will be out of touch most, or all, of this week. I am not sure I will be in the mood to hunt and peck keys with one hand after my surgery. But, I will be checking up on everybody. That means if you get into mischief, I will hear about it.

(Two of the three textures used in the image are from Shadowhouse Creations.)

  1. Well, I'm sorry to read that you've not been well and hope you will soon be on a road to recovery. Another lovely image again, sad, full of pathos and probably reflecting your mood.

  2. Colin - Interesting. I would not have named what I was feeling "sad", but your comment made me think. I believe you are right about the image reflecting my mood—certainly some part of it. I was more conscious of impatience to be fully restored to good health and relieved to feel like getting out the camera. Those underlying notes can be quite strong, can't they?

Thank you for your thoughtful comment.

  3. Again, another beautiful image. I love the idea of the flowers in a mason jar and the great texture you choose. I am sorry you haven't been feeling well, but it doesn't appear to have a negative effect on your creativity. My wish is that you have a speedy recovery and you use your rehab time for constructive purposes.

  4. Ken - Thank you for the comment. I love using those old mason jars. One of the things I enjoy about using the textures is the subtle changes you can make with layer adjustments and masks. Almost too many possibilities, if you know what I mean.

I haven't been what I could really call ill, after all, just not up to par. I have been told that the recovery from this hand surgery is extremely fast. That sounds great to me. I hope to pecking away with my left hand within a couple of days.

  5. Anita, a lovely photo with a classic timeless feel. I hope you're feeling better and I'm sending my best wishes for a speedy recovery from your hand surgery. Since you're watching, I promise to be on "my best" behavior...yeah, I know that's not saying much. ;-)

  6. Very painterly and love the texture. You're getting quite good at this! :) I really like to see flowers in this aged and "wise" state. People are always taking photos of them when they are in their prime. This is very nice. Best of luck with your hand!

  7. Earl & Paul - Thanks for all the kind words. More later. Advil time.

  10. I hope they are giving you something better than Advil for your hand. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Again, love the textures in this.

  11. Mark - Actually Advil was my choice. There hasn't been a lot of pain. Of course if I try to move my fingers a great deal, or put any stress on the stitches, it gets my attention. I am making steady progress, thanks.

I really enjoy what the textures can do for a less than interesting background.
