I Flunked Blogger Migration 101

(Click on the thumbnail for the bigger, better version)

(For what seemed like two weeks at least—a weekend is a long time when you are wandering in the wilderness, whimpering in desperation—my blog was floating somewhere out there in cyberspace, and I had no idea what was going on. Finally, today, I backtracked, restored the original settings and, at least for now, it seems all is normal.

However, the deadline appoacheth. Rest assured, I will seek guidance before tackling migration a second time. This round I plan to hire someone who speaks web design—specifically someone who is familiar with the Blogger dialect. I am not about to dive into that nightmare task again. This is a job that definitely calls for more web savvy than I have. Evidently, I had the settings all cockeyed and heaven only knows where I had routed my poor little blog. It doesn’t appear bruised by the buffeting it must have taken ricocheting about out there in space, but it makes me shudder to think.

Talk about being upset. Whoa. Major league stuff. I managed to keep my sanity by using my camera; but it was a close call, I don’t mind admitting. Lest you think I was anxious about my precious posts, I wasn’t that devastated about losing what I have written. Heavens, no. For one thing, if I did care that much, I have the rough drafts in MS Word. The photos are on my hard drive. What upset me was losing the comments. That is the heart of the blog, after all. All those warm, funny, thoughtful, informative, and thought-provoking comments posting by readers. Why wouldn’t I be tearing my hair out at the thought of those being lost. Whew. Gives me the chills to think about it.

  1. I was starting to panic all I could get when I got home from a 2 day trip was text in my RSS feed. Hope the next go around is a little easier.

  2. Ray - It was unnerving on my end. I plan to hire someone, relax, and just enjoy it when it's finished. I hate giving up, but you have to own up to it when you're beaten.

By the way, I'm having a blast with lighting experiments. Thanks a million for your encouragement in that department.

  3. Glad all is back to normal. I have just bought my own domain name and looking into moving my Wordpress hosted blog to a host. Bring all the previous postings over is something I want but not sure how feasible that really is. Hope it all works out for you!

  4. Monte - Thanks. That transfer is exactly what I was supposed to be doing. Blogger requires it by May 1 (Gasp!). You would think it would be fairly straightforward. Darn, it hurts to admit that I just can't wrap my tiny brain around something like that. I got the domain name through Google and Blogger—that was the easy part.

  5. I gave up and hired someone myself. I had her do more than just migrate my blog though, she's the one that designed my new web site and customized my galleries. Her contact info is on my site in case you want to get in touch with her. (Monte -- she knows Wordpress quite well.)

  6. Rakesh - What a relief! I have been on the phone hitting nothing but dead ends in my area. Thank you for the tip. I hope this helps Monte as well. Your contact certainly did a lovely job with your now web site.

  7. Anita, I've read of a number of people that have had problems with the Blogger migration so you shouldn't feel this is only your problem. Hopefully the person Rakesh recommended will be able to help you.

  8. Earl - Thank you for more encouragement. As I learn about more and more people who have struggled with the process, I am feeling much better about this. It's a relief. I was feeling hopelessly stupid. Now, I just feel a little behind the pack when it comes to using a computer—but, hey, I'm used to that. :)

  9. Good luck, Anita. It's not always as simple as it seems. As simple as they try to make it, sometimes it just confounds the heck out of us. You are not alone. It's happened to me, too and I'm a programmer. :-)

  10. Late to the party, to say the least. Your about to move, it seems. I imported all my previous Blogger posts into my current Wordpress blog with a simple import tool. It was included in Wordpress, and worked as a charm. But, both when I used Blogger and now, I rolled my own hosting. This might be different from your situation with blogspot. Nevertheless, good luck with the migration! I hope you progressing at least a bit on this, since this is what you want. I know, it's tricky, as already said by Paul and others.

  11. Ove - Thanks for your encouragement and I sincerely appreciate all the good luck wishes that come my way. It turns out that I may not even need to do a migration. It's more than a little embarrasing to admit that I am so dense when it comes to some of this stuff.

Although I recently investigated Wordpress, I have quite enough on my plate for now. I would prefer to stay with what I am doing and not rock the boat unless I have to.
