Mountain Tops

(Click on the thumbnail to view larger image)

By standing atop top a bench on our deck, I can get a good look above the rooftops and telephone wires at the mountains across our valley. This was one of those glorious fall days embellished by stunning cloud formations. When I took this shot, I was reminded of a post I read on one of my favorite photoblogs (It may have been Paul Maxim's site --I stop by there regularly to enjoy seeing the world through his eyes). He was mulling over the perverse nature of photographers. To paraphrase the observation that caught my attention, most people might look up at the sky on a given occasion and say something like, "What a gorgeous day. Not a cloud in the sky." The photographer standing next to that person is thinking: "Drat. Not a cloud in the sky. Oh, well. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day."

Check out Paul Maxim's blog and enjoy his beautiful work http://www.paulmaximphotography.com/.

  1. Thanks so much for mentioning me and my little corner of the internet. You're certainly right about me - I'd much rather see clouds (broken clouds, preferrably) than clear blue sky. Which, of course, puts me at a bit of a disadvantage here in the Las Vegas valley. I'm not sure how they justify paying meteorologists here. Each day, the forecast is pretty much the same as yesterday's (sunny) and you can be reasonably sure that it will be the same tomorrow (sunny again!). The good news, of course, is that it rarely contains the word "snow" (as it did frequently back in NY).

  2. My pleasure, Paul. Since I am such a fan, I wanted to share the joy.
I got a kick out your commment about the meteorologists. We have much the same situation here in the San Fernando Valley. We are so spoiled. On the rare occasions when we do get some moisture, the meteorologists never predict simple "rain"--it's always "Storm Watch!!". Like you, I am just grateful that our forecasts don't include the "s" word.

  3. I completely agree with you both on this. Give me a sky with anything from patchy clouds to completely overcast and I am happy. Blue sky is just so boring now and hard to meter. :-) Beau

  4. Beau, just one more thing that makes us a little strange to most people, right? Lists are popular it seems, so maybe I will start one titled "100 Weird Things About Photographers".
